Juan Carlos Antunez is an Oficer of the Spanish Army. He began his interest in Islamic religion, culture and civilization when in 1998 was selected by the Spanish Ministry of Defense to attend to a two years full time course on Arabic language. He has obtained a Master degree in “International relations: Conflict Prevention and Managing” (“Universidad Catolica de Avila”, Spain) a post graduate degree in “Islamic Religion, Culture and Civilization” (“Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia” and “Junta Islamica”, Spain) and a certificate in Islamic Studies at the Sarajevo based Faculty of Islamic Studies. He has already completed a postgraduate program of specialization in “Analysis of Jihadist Terrorism” (Universidad de Granada, Spain). He has also attended the programs “Social and Phycological Aspects of Terrorism-Countering the Ideology of Terrorism” and “Legal Aspects of Combating Terrorism” at the “Centre of Excellence Defense Against Terrorism”, (Ankara, Turkey).

His involvement in security activities, both at national and international level, has given him the opportunity to specialize in International Religious Motivated Terrorism, its networks and development, as well as the particular relationship with religious extremism. His last positions in the Balkans and the North of Africa, where different religions and ethnical communities live together, and Christianity intermingles with Islam, have increased his interest in the local culture, religion and history of the different groups. He currently works as an International Civil Consultant in Sarajevo where he is also pursuing a PhD in “Strategic Analysis and Risk Assessment” at the “International University of Sarajevo”.
